The Lenovo’s new ThinkPad laptop X1 Carbon laptop, revealed at IFA in Berlin, comes equipped with several AI features. Lenovo unveiled the latest version of its reliable ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop. It features Intel’s newest Lunar Lake processor and offers several intriguing AI capabilities, such as posture alerts and attention timers.

Alongside the Carbon, Lenovo’s new ThinkPad laptop introduced an AutoTwist design that enables the laptop display to swivel back and forth. However, this feature is still in the proof-of-concept stage, so it won’t be available for purchase in the near future.

The key takeaway here is that Lenovo has some innovative concepts in the pipeline. Please read on for further details.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition

Lenovo's newest ThinkPad laptop

Like its predecessors, the Lenovo’s new ThinkPad laptop X1 Carbon Gen 13 is built for serious productivity. Weighing just 2.20 pounds, it offers a lightweight design, numerous connectivity options (including two Thunderbolt 4 ports), and an impressive 18-hour battery life on a single charge. Additionally, you can enhance your experience with AI features. Is that cool? Absolutely! Is it necessary? That’s up for debate.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition includes several “Smart Modes” that can be accessed through a simple widget. For instance, the Shield mode features Privacy Guard, which limits screen visibility for privacy. The Attention mode helps minimize distractions, while the Wellness mode reminds you to adjust your posture and take breaks to alleviate eye strain (something I could certainly use after hours of screen time!).

Under the hood, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor (Lunar Lake), up to 32GB of RAM, and up to 2TB of SSD storage. With this hardware, I anticipate fast and reliable performance. The 13-inch display offers a 2.8K resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 16:10 aspect ratio, and 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage. (The taller aspect ratio really makes multitasking much easier, I must say.)

The ThinkPad Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition will be available for purchase in November 2024, starting at $1,999.

Lenovo AutoTwist AI PC (proof of concept)

Lenovo's newest ThinkPad laptop

Lenovo’s AutoTwist AI PC design is truly intriguing. The display (as shown above) automatically swivels back and forth, tracking your movements to keep you centered during meetings or presentations. (To be honest, it sounds a bit nightmarish—thanks, AI!)

The AutoTwist features a smart lid that automatically closes when the laptop is not in use, and it can respond to voice commands like “close laptop,” “laptop mode,” and “tablet mode.” Is it useful? Perhaps for the right user. Is it a bit unsettling? Definitely.

Currently, the Lenovo AutoTwist AI PC is just a proof of concept, so it may not even reach the market. Nevertheless, I commend Lenovo for pushing the boundaries and experimenting with new ideas, even if it’s a very niche product.
