Mauritius, famous for its beautiful beaches and luxury resorts, is facing a slowdown in its tourist industry in early 2025. Fewer visitors are being recorded compared to the same time in 2024. This drop is having a strong effect on hotels, local tour companies, restaurants, and small businesses that depend on vacationers to make a living. When fewer holidaymakers come, the country also earns less money.
Several reasons are causing this fall in visitor numbers. Weather issues, rising travel costs, and strong competition from other destinations all play a part. As the travel sector slows down, Mauritius is already trying to find ways to bring more guests to the island in the months ahead.
February Sees a Sharp Decline
Official numbers from Statistics Mauritius show that 95,991 visitors came to the island in February 2025. That’s a big drop from 109,266 in February 2024. This means arrivals fell by 12.1% compared to the same month last year.
Most of the travelers came by plane — 94,881 to be exact. Only 1,110 arrived by boat, showing that air travel remains the main way people reach the island.
This drop didn’t just start in February. In January 2025, the island welcomed 116,926 sightseers. In January 2024, the figure was 119,305. This shows a 2% decline from one year to the next.
For the first two months of 2025, Mauritius recorded 212,917 arrivals. This is 15,654 fewer than in the same period last year, when 228,571 people visited. That makes a total decline of 6.8% so far this year.
European Tourist Decline
Europe has always been the largest source of travelers for Mauritius. But even this key market is shrinking. In February 2024, 81,244 visitors came from Europe. But in February 2025, the number dropped to 72,162 — a big decline.
Air travel from Europe stayed strong, with 71,516 people flying in. But boat arrivals dropped sharply from 4,720 last year to just 646 in February 2025.
In January, the numbers also fell. Mauritius welcomed 79,391 Europeans in January 2024. But only 72,806 arrived in January 2025.
Several European countries sent fewer guests this year. These include Portugal, Turkey, Romania, the Czech Republic, Croatia, and Slovenia.
The drop from Europe is worrying since these international visitors usually spend more and stay longer.
Fewer Arrivals from Africa and North America
Mauritius also receives people from other parts of the world, such as Africa and North America. But these numbers are down too.
In February 2025, only 4,018 South Africans came. That’s down from 4,895 in February 2024 — an 8.5% decrease. These regional travelers are important, especially because of the short flight time.
Arrivals from the United States also dropped. In February 2024, 1,751 American visitors arrived. But by February 2025, that number fell to just 738. That’s a sharp fall of 57.8%.
This means that fewer people from far-away countries are choosing Mauritius as their holiday destination this year.
Tourist Revenue Drops

Tourism is a major source of income for Mauritius. With fewer tourists coming, the money earned from this sector is also falling.
In January 2025, Mauritius made Rs 8.5 billion from tourist spending. This is lower than the Rs 9.1 billion earned in January 2024, based on data from the Bank of Mauritius.
We don’t yet have the full numbers for February 2025. But experts expect the earnings to be lower than the Rs 7.4 billion collected in February 2024. This drop is expected to continue if the number of tourists stays low.
Why Are Fewer People Visiting?
There are many reasons why fewer tourists are coming to Mauritius in 2025.
One major cause is Cyclone Garance. This storm hit the island in late February. It brought heavy rain and strong winds, which caused flight delays and cancellations. The airport had to shut down for a short time, which stopped many tourists from arriving on time.
Another key reason is the global economy. Prices are going up everywhere — including the cost of flights. Many families now find it too expensive to travel abroad. Some are delaying their trips, while others are choosing cheaper holiday spots.
Mauritius also faces strong competition. Other island destinations like Bali, Thailand, and the Maldives are offering travel deals that attract the same kind of tourists. These places are becoming more popular because they are cheaper and offer many of the same things — sunshine, beaches, and resorts.
Looking Ahead with Hope
Even though 2025 started off slowly, the tourism industry in Mauritius remains hopeful. The government and the private sector still aim to welcome 1.4 million tourists by the end of the year.
To reach this goal, several steps are being taken. Airlines are adding more flights from key regions like Asia and the Middle East.
The tourism board is also launching new ad campaigns to promote Mauritius to potential visitors. These ads are running on TV, social media, and travel websites.
Special offers and travel packages are also being promoted to make trips to Mauritius more appealing. These include discounts on hotels, free excursions, and better prices on flights.
Mauritius still has a lot to offer. From clear blue waters and white sand beaches to peaceful resorts and friendly locals, the island remains a top tourist destination. With better planning, smart marketing, and strong partnerships, Mauritius hopes to see tourist numbers rise again in the coming months.
