Cyclone Chido’s Widespread Impact
Cyclone Chido caused devastating damage in Mozambique and Mayotte, leaving thousands of people in distress. The cyclone killed at least 34 individuals, injured over 300, and destroyed more than 20,000 homes in Mozambique. After devastating Mayotte, Cyclone Chido struck Mozambique with full force. On Sunday, it made landfall in Cabo Delgado province, where it claimed 28 lives. Additionally, three fatalities occurred in Nampula province, while three others died in Niassa province.
The cyclone’s winds reached an incredible 260 km/h (161 mph) and brought 250 mm (10 inches) of rainfall within just 24 hours. Consequently, it demolished approximately 23,600 houses and destroyed 170 fishing boats. Authorities estimate that nearly 175,000 people are now facing the aftermath. The northern region of Mozambique, already struggling with poverty and ongoing conflict, now finds itself in even greater distress.
Cyclone’s Path Toward Malawi and Zimbabwe
By Monday, Cyclone Chido began moving toward Malawi. Meteorologists predicted its dissipation near Zimbabwe on Tuesday. Nevertheless, the extensive damage in Mozambique highlights the pressing need for humanitarian aid and recovery efforts.
Severe Damage in Mayotte
In Mayotte, the cyclone caused equally severe destruction. On Tuesday, François Bayrou addressed the French National Assembly, stating that the cyclone had killed around 20 people. However, he emphasized that the final death toll remains uncertain. Furthermore, the Prime Minister reported that 200 individuals sustained serious injuries, while 1,500 suffered moderate injuries.
The Prefect of Mayotte expressed concerns that the number of victims might reach several hundred or even a few thousand. Meanwhile, the cyclone destroyed critical infrastructure, leaving countless families without electricity or clean water. As a result, many residents have been displaced. The French government has mobilized resources to assist those affected.
