Deputy Speaker Zahid Nazurally has officially resigned from the Muvman Liberater (ML), as confirmed by party members. He submitted a resignation letter to the party leader, and an ML member confirmed the news last night.

Ahead of the general election, it seemed unlikely that Nazurally, MP for constituency No. 10 (Montagne-Blanche/Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est), would be nominated for another term. His distancing from the party was attributed to his bold stances, which earned him praise from the opposition for his impartiality as deputy speaker. Despite being part of the government alliance, his often critical positions fueled debates, sometimes challenging the ruling party.

In August, Nazurally was seen sitting separately from other government members during an event at the Indira Gandhi Indian Cultural Centre, leaving discreetly before the Prime Minister’s arrival. That same month, he indirectly responded to the arrest of peaceful protesters in CĂ´te-d’Or by posting on Facebook: “No to the abuse of authority.” This was not the first time he spoke out on sensitive issues. During an Independence Day celebration in Melrose, he urged voters to take responsibility, stating: “You made me your MP. The National Assembly is for you… After 56 years, only two families have held the Prime Minister’s post in this country.”

Controversy also surrounded the appointment of Adrien Duval as Speaker in July, as Nazurally did not preside over the session, despite some believing he should have. Opposition members even suggested he take over as Speaker following Sooroojdev Phokeer’s resignation on medical grounds.

Attempts to reach the MP for No. 10 after his resignation were unsuccessful.
