The government of Mauritius has launched the Special Allowance 2024 to support both businesses and workers.
This program helps employers pay the mandatory 14th-month bonus to full-time employees.
So far, over Rs 765 million has been distributed to 6,781 employers.
As a result, this support eases financial pressure and ensures workers receive what they are owed.
Why Was the Special Allowance 2024 Created?
In 2024, wages increased due to the new National Minimum Wage and Salary Compensation.
As a result, many businesses — especially small ones — struggled to afford the annual bonus.
To solve this problem, the government introduced the Special Allowance 2024.
Through this program, businesses receive help so they can:
- Stay open during tough times
- Continue paying workers fairly
Who Can Qualify for the Scheme?
Not all businesses are eligible. To apply, employers must meet the following criteria:
- Employees must be full-time
- Their basic salary must not exceed Rs 50,000
In addition, the business must fall into one of these categories:
- Export-oriented companies
- SMEs with turnover under Rs 100 million in 2023–24
- Registered charities, NGOs, religious groups, or trade unions
- BPO, security, cleaning, or construction firms with turnover under Rs 750 million
Therefore, if your company falls outside these categories, you cannot apply.
What Support Is Provided?
The support depends on how your company is doing:
- If your business lost money or had profit drop by more than 50%, you get full bonus help.
- If profit dropped between 10% and 50%, you get half the bonus amount.
This way, the support goes where it is most needed.
